The Origins and Evolution of Indian Head Massage
In India, massage has always been an integral part of family life, woven into daily routines and suitable for all ages. Indian Head Massage originated as part of daily grooming rituals, with mothers passing down their techniques to daughters. This tradition involves using oils like sesame, almond, and coconut, which are massaged into the scalp to ensure a healthy scalp and beautiful, long hair.
Indian barbers have also played a significant role, incorporating head massage into their services, a practice known as "champi." This word is the root of the English term "shampoo." Barbers pass their unique methods from generation to generation, with massages available on street corners and beaches across India.
In contrast, Western cultures often treat the scalp separately from the rest of the body. In India, the scalp is considered an extension of the skin and receives extensive care. Indian Head Massage techniques have evolved, with each family and region adding special touches. Narendra Mehta introduced this complementary therapy to the West in 1981 through The London Centre of Indian Champissage International.
